Handloom Saree Care: Washing, Drying and Storage

The safest care advice is the advice for your specific saree. Check its label or ask the seller before washing. Handloom is a method of construction, not a single fibre, dye or cleaning requirement.

Before the first wash

Identify the fabric information and inspect the border, pallu and any decorative yarns. A saree may combine more than one material. If the care label is missing, contact the team with the product name rather than assuming that a method used for another saree will be suitable.

Tell the cleaner or seller about contrasting colours and any areas you are worried about. If professional cleaning is recommended, follow that advice. General tips on a website should not override an individual garment’s instructions.

If washing at home is permitted

Use the water temperature and cleaning method recommended for the item. Handle the fabric gently and avoid aggressive rubbing, twisting or wringing. Wash contrasting or strong colours separately unless the care instructions clearly say otherwise. Do not add bleach or improvised household treatments to solve a colour or stain problem.

Keep the process simple. More detergent, longer soaking and stronger scrubbing are not automatically better. If you are unsure about colourfastness or a decorative border, stop and seek product-specific advice before continuing.

Dry without unnecessary stress

Follow the recommended drying instructions and support the saree so the wet fabric is not pulled unevenly. Avoid using heat or tumble drying unless the label permits it. Shade drying is a conservative option for many coloured textiles, but the product’s directions still come first.

Allow the saree to dry fully before folding it away. Storing damp fabric can lead to odour and damage. Check the folds and border as well as the main body before returning it to storage.

Iron with the right setting

Check the recommended heat level for the fabric blend. A setting suitable for one fibre may be unsuitable for another yarn in the same saree. If permitted, use a clean pressing cloth and avoid prolonged pressure over decorative sections. Ask for advice when the fabric composition is unclear.

Store for the next wear

Choose a clean, dry storage space away from direct sunlight and dampness. Avoid packing the saree so tightly that the border stays sharply compressed. A breathable cloth cover can help keep it clean; inspect stored garments periodically and refold gently where needed.

Before an occasion, take the saree out early enough to check its condition and prepare the blouse. This is more useful than discovering a stain or unwanted crease just before leaving.

What to do about a stain

Do not scrub at a stain or test a strong chemical on the visible surface. Note what caused it, how long it has been present and the fabric details, then consult a suitable cleaner. Give them the care label and mention any contrasting border or metallic-looking yarn.

Your care checklist

  • Keep the product name and care instructions.
  • Confirm the cleaning method before the first wash.
  • Handle permitted washing gently.
  • Dry completely before storage.
  • Use the heat setting appropriate to the whole garment.
  • Seek advice for stains or uncertain composition.
